A sorority mixer at a local bowling alley goes terribly wrong when the five women who own the building turn out to not be what they seem.

Though it has sometimes been staged, the works drama is to be found within the music itself, which illuminates the incidents with what the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham once called a bunch of the loveliest tunes in existence.

Small town America, 1945. The boys are coming home, as is Clarence Laidlaw who served overseas in lieu of serving time in prison. Chaos and confusion greet Clarence upon his return - his pre-war moonshine activities and absence have embittered his teenage son, split apart his family, and alienated the small town. Moreover, his conniving sister-in-law conspires with the crooked sheriff to prevent a family reconciliation. In attempting to stabilize his family, and in seeking to punish the conspirator who brought him before the law, Clarence almost destroys both the town and his family. But sanity, love and music conquer all, and family and town are reunited.

In each frame, celebrities bowled first, then the professional bowled the second ball. The setup of the game was the standard 10 frames. There was an opportunity to win an extra $1,000 for the college: certain frames had a blue pin; if the celebrity hit the blue pin, $1,000 was added to the $5,000 prize only if they won the match. The winning team's college received $5,000. The losing team's college received $2,500.
